A FEATURE LENGTH DOCUMENTARY ON THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE STYLE OF FLEXN
Originating from Brooklyn’s Jamaican dance halls in the early 90s, pioneer dancer and choreographer Reggie “Regg Roc” Gray takes you through a culture that’s as much about community, persona and story-telling as it is about dancing.
IT’S PERSONAL EXPRESSION, EMOTIONS AND STORY TELLING THAT DIRECT THE DANCER’S MOVES
It’s personal expression, emotions and storytelling that direct the dancer’s moves, using their bodies to create symbolism and exposing the feelings they want to show you. It can be beautiful or it can be aggressive, it can be subtle or it can be unsparing. FlexN involves several dance styles including pausing, gliding, hat tricks, connecting, bone breaking and get low, but it’s more than just dancing. The way you dress, the way you walk and the way you talk are all part of the culture and an extension of that expression.
Reggie’s journey started in the school yard, battling out against other classmates against hand beaten rhythms on desks. Battles are still standard ground, but it’s a stronger and more positive message of collaboration and togetherness that Reggie’s bringing to the world of dance.
You can choose to be a performer that faces inwards and only looks to be better than other people, or you can choose to be a role-model that looks to bring communities together, not just on a cultural platform, but on a social one too. FlexN isn’t a dance form, it’s a way of life and it’s this message that’s fighting to break through the noise.
FLEXN ISN'T A DANCE FORM, IT'S A WAY OF LIFE
The film is primarily a documentary, focussing on interviews with dancers, choreographers, artistic directors and other people supporting and involved in the culture. It will also feature dramatic re-enactments of past events, people’s lives and what motivated them to move away from a different future. From personal and circumstantial issues to political, racial and social ones; every dancer has a story and every dancer uses those experiences of conflict to push them to become a better person.
With the current politcal and social activity happening in the USA today, this narrative is totally relevant and crosses the boundry beyond just dancing and into connected issues that everyone should care about.
Infinite takes you through the journey and history of this worldwide movement, how the culture is inspiring people to not just move their bodies, but to move their minds, and how the future of FlexN is engaging communities in all walks of life to break away from the struggles they face.
THIS JOURNEY IS FLEXN, THIS JOURNEY IS INFINITE.
